We had fun learning about yoga and doing yoga today!
*Backpacks are full again. Please empty and bring tomorrow for any last items that go home!
*I will provide pizza for snack tomorrow. If your child will not eat pizza, please send a snack for them to have instead. No lunch boxes are needed.
*I look forward to celebrating the end of the year with your child tomorrow! Students are encouraged to wear NPE clothes or pajamas for our last NPE spirit day!

Today was a great day!
We spent the morning on our field trip to Lankenau Medical Center. We talked all about our five senses!
In the afternoon, we did some eXtra cleaning for x day!

We also went to Tech lab for the last time as first graders!

We went to Ms. Clay for our last science activity on comparing and measuring!
We ended the day visiting another 2nd grade teacher!

We went to Ms. Clay's class for science.

We ended the day with Mrs. DeSanctis talking about our strengths and never giving up!

We read a short story about a dog and a chick to help us work on comparing and contrasting!

In writing workshop, we wrote our last realistic fiction story! (Zoe)
We ended the day learning some fun facts about guppies.
We also named our class guppy DJ YELLOW!
It was a good day!

We read the story What's So Special About Squirrels? and compared and contrasted the different squirrels mentioned in the story.
Our new spelling words have the vowel pattern OO! (Corey)
In math, we started a new chapter on Calendars and Time. (Mamdouh)*This is a good time to see if your child remembers ordinal numbers! (first-1, second-2,etc.)
In writing workshop, we had a writing celebration! Thank you to EVERYONE that came today! We were so excited to read our stories to you!
In Science, we learned some facts about snails! (Jeffrey)We have 3 snails in our freshwater aquarium now!

We went to an assembly and saw a theater performance about fairy tales and using our imagination. (Sky)
We talked about 2 neat freshwater plants: Elodea and Camboda that live in freshwater!

We compared 2 versions of the beloved folktale The Little Red Hen. We identified how the hen solved her problem.
In math, we discussed a couple of "tricks" that can help us add mentally!
In writing workshop, we heard the story Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat to see how the author used details to help elaborate what was happening in her story. We are trying to do the same in our stories.
We compared and contrasted 4 different seeds that we will grow over the next few weeks!
It was a good day!

We read the story Tippy-Toe Chick Go and discussed the problem the characters had in the story.
In math, we took our test over addition and subtraction to 40!
In writing workshop, we worked on adding realistic details in our story to help our readers "picture" what is happening in our stories better.
We ended the day doing our last solids & liquids lesson with Mrs. Martorelli.
It was a great day!

This morning we went to an assembly hosted by the Academy of Natural Sciences and got to see 3 real animals!
Then we went to the Tech Lab!
In math, we reviewed how to solve word problems and then did some Thinking Cap problems! (*see note below about homework change.)
In writing workshop, we started our reading benchmark test over our reading, spelling, & writing skills!
Then we watched a story called Recycle That!
We ended the day with Mrs. Martorelli!

Notes:
**I changed math homework for tonight since so many were out sick today. You will find a thinking cap page 83, 84 instead of our practice test. We did 4 problems like it in class today so it should be a good challenge! Our math test will now be next Tuesday!
**As I stated in my email sent out earlier this morning, many were out sick today. Strep, flu, and croup are currently going around our room. I am on antibiotics for tonsillitis. If your child has a cough that has lasted a few days, seeing a doctor is highly suggested given the number of our class sick. Thanks so much!
**Second grade will sell snacks again tomorrow. If interested snacks cost $1.
**Wear blue or white for Earth Day at NPE tomorrow!

Our spelling words end with the suffix -ly or -ful.
We read the story The Cat Chase and discussed the cause and effect events in the story!
In math, we learned some ways we can add 3 1-digit numbers together.
In writing workshop, we met with our partners before sharing a few of our fiction stories out loud!
We talked about the importance of recycling in our Scholastic News and then decorated a bag that we can use to collect trash in our neighborhoods!

Because of our unpredictable weather, we reviewed for our math test this morning. Our practice tests are in folders today so they can be corrected and returned next time we are at school.
We read about toothbrushes in our new Scholastic News and discussed how we can keep our teeth healthy.
Then we took our test over numbers to 40.
We learned about skeletons and the 3 functions of our skeleton.
We ended our day putting a skeleton together!

We saw Mrs. Geraghty this morning and afternoon for 2 different weather activities!

We read the story A Trip to Washington, DC and discussed some of our country's treasures that are found there!
In math, we continued exploring how to make numbers with tens and ones.
In writing workshop, we read aloud some of our published opinions stories and celebrated all our writing accomplishments!
We ended the day with an assembly from a basketball player from the Harlem Wizards!
It was a good day!

Note:
We had a lock down drill today so as you can imagine students had many questions. I kept it as simple as I could but understandably some expressed some emotions. Please know this is probably the worse thing I have to do as an educator but very necessary. Thank you for your support.

Today was a fun day celebrating Dr. Seuss and reading!
It was fun to see so many of our kids dressed like a book character too!
We heard many fun Dr. Seuss stories today!
This morning we had a visit from 2 mystery readers!
We also had a special DEAR time during math!
We got goldfish and made a graph showing how many of each color goldfish we got. Then we ate our goldfish!
In writing workshop, we wrote a book review on a Dr. Seuss story!
We ended the day singing in Hoot!

We finished the story The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins then we designed our own hats!
It has been fun seeing all the ways Dr. Seuss makes his stories so memorable.
We reviewed our spelling features and how to identify adjectives.
In math, we are continuing to investigate strategies that we can use to help us compare 2 groups of objects on a graph.
In writing workshop, we reread our stories to see if our sentences make sense. 
We went to Ms. McTaggart for our last map skills lesson.

In math, we started graphing data and then used our data to answer questions.
In writing workshop, we worked on our introductions and made sure we were not "spilling the beans" and telling our readers too much too soon!
We went to Ms. McTaggart's class and talked more about maps.

In writing workshop, we worked together to create class anthologies!

This morning our kids went to our Jump Rope for Heart event! It was great to see some of our own parents there helping out!
We read about some of America's symbols and landmarks in our new Scholastic News!
In math, we took our math test on weight!
We heard the story Grace for President and Duck for President.
Then we wrote what we would do if we were president!
We ended the day singing with our friends at Hootenanny!

We read about Abe Lincoln and why we still honor him on President's day.
We also made a Lincoln pendent necklace or bracelet that we will take home tomorrow!
We reviewed for our math test tomorrow on weight!

In math, we did some challenging thinking cap problems on weight!
Mrs. DeSanctis came to our class to do a lesson on tattling this afternoon.
It was a good day!

We read about George Washington and designed money with ourselves!

What a cute bunch of 100 year old students in class today!
We read the story Emily's 100 Day of School and did some fun 100 day activities!
We also read the story One Zillion Valentines and discussed some of the kind acts we saw the characters do in the story.

This morning we reviewed how a contraction is made and our "er, ur, ir" spelling features!
We read the story I'm a Caterpillar and compared its life cycle to a frog's life cycle! (Phin)
Then we went to the Tech Lab. (Sandy)
In math, we used cubes to find the weight of objects.
We discussed how our words can be cotton ball words (kind) or sandpaper words (mean)!
We read the story Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink then wrote nice letters with lots of cotton ball words to a friend in class! (Zoe)
We also learned more about Rosa Parks and others that helped changed unfair laws. (Mamdouh)

We also finished making our Valentine bags! The kids are very excited to fill them up with our cards!

In math, we started our unit 10 chapter on weight!
In writing workshop, we reviewed how we can write comparisons in our opinion stories.
We saw Ms. McTaggart for more map fun this afternoon!

In writing workshop, we talked about writing reviews on our favorite places, things, and movies!
We looked at our traveling teddy messages and maps to see other places he has traveled!

We read the story Gregory's Shadow and then used our opinion to make a graph that showed whether we think he will or won't see  his shadow tomorrow. (Joshua)

In writing workshop, we realized we could write an opinion story about our least favorite object in our collection. (Phin)
We ended the day with Mr. Mendell doing another STEM activity. (Hailey)

This morning we took our long e spelling test.
Then we went to the middle school for our field trip. It was fun to do some activities for our community with Jonathan's mom and her class!
We read about different ways penguins work together in our Scholastic News.
We reviewed the addition strategies we've been practicing in class. (I know this math chapter may be challenging but please know we are trying to expose your child to different ways to work with numbers. If they are not grasping a strategy, my hope is that they use whatever strategy they are most comfortable with, even if it is using a number line!)
We ended the day singing in Hoot!

We also discussed how to break longer words into 2 smaller ones to make it easier to read!
In math we worked on a new strategy to help us add large numbers together. If a number is greater than 10 we can break it into a number bond with 10 and the left over ones!
We wrote one more teaching book to help us see how much we learned in our information writing unit!
We ended the day reading about Martin Luther King Jr in our Scholastic News.
